Mamma Guilt Monday – Confessions of a Working Mum

February 22, 2010 By: Mamma Kerr Category: Blog Hops, Featured Post, Mamma Guilt Monday, Mamma's Memes, Working Mamma

Regular readers of MammaKerr will have noticed that I LOVE memes.  Last night I came across a new meme, while hopping onto a blog on the Friday Follow blog hop.

The Mama Guilt Mondays meme is the brainchild of Cop Mama.  Cop Mama thought it would be a good idea to share our Mama Guilt so that we know that we are NOT alone.  She says, “We all struggle in this wonderful, chaotic, ever-challenging thing call motherhood!”

I think it’s a great idea for a meme!  As a busy working mum of twins, I frequently struggle with Mama Guilt.  I’d say that it’s no coincidence that this meme falls on a Monday.  Mondays are certainly the most likely days for me to feel a pang of Mama Guilt because, like I said, I am a Working Mamma

After a blissful weekend with the family, reality bites on Monday mornings, when I have to rush off to work after dropping the girls off at school.  I’m lucky in that I live and work only a short distance from their school, and I work flexitime.  This enables me the luxury of being able to take the girls to school myself every morning.  Unfortunately though, I have to rely on family and childcare to collect the girls at the end of the school day.

I feel guilty about not being there to pick up the girls and hear about their day when they come out the school gates.  I feel guilty about not always being the one who helps them with their homework.   I feel guilty about not always being the one who serves up their dinner.  (Mondays and Tuesdays, they do their homework and have their dinner at my inlaws.)

Wednesday to Friday, they go to After School Care for a couple of hours.  They actually really enjoy it!  However, I still have pangs of guilt when I pick them up, as I feel I have to rush through dinner, homework and bedtime routines.  I feel guilty that they don’t have a lot of time to relax at home in the evenings.

Every time I mention these feelings to friends and family, they reassure me that the girls are happy, confident and secure.  However, I just can’t seem to get rid of this guilt.  I guess it’s just part and parcel of being a working mum.

  1. That’s exactly why I do Mama Guilt on Mondays! I too feel guilty going back to work on Monday mornings. But in the end, we are doing the best we can and we love our children dearly!
