Working Mommy Wednesday
![]()
I’ve been pretty busy at work of late. In fact, the summer is my busiest period at work. This is not ideal because, as you know, there’s only a couple more weeks left until the school summer holidays.
The school holidays pose great challenges for working parents. The summer break is six weeks long, and most parents can only take a fortnight’s holiday during this time. Some parents even find this impossible!
I am lucky to be able to take more than two weeks off during the summer holidays. I’m taking twelve days annual leave off for my summer holiday to Majorca (just over 2 weeks), as well as taking a day off each of the remaining three weeks.
I’m also lucky to have my inlaws and my sister available to watch the girls. However, this year I’m also taking advantage of the Summer Day Camp, provided by the YMCA. My daughters already attend After School Care provided by the YMCA, and they really enjoy it! Therefore, I thought I’d use up my Childcare Vouchers by sending the girls to Summer Camp one or two days per week.
What are your childcare plans for over the summer?
This week Work, Wife, Mom, Life wants to know:
Do you like the Working Mommy Wednesday meme as a specific question? Or more as an open-ended tell-us-a-story type of thing?
I do like having a prompt to inspire my post. I also like to see how other participants respond to the prompt. However, sometimes I do like to take the opportunity to vent my spleen on a working mommy issue that has rattled me during the past week or so!

Sadly I’m still pretty unemployed! I’m on the midwifery bank (so not technically unemployed), but I haven’t had much joy with shifts.
1Our childcare winds up for a large part of the holidays & generally only runs during summer if it’s booked in advance and it’s not possible for me to book in advance when the work is ad hoc.
So taking on shifts will be a challenge for me. If they call and it’s a big vague if, then I’ll have to try to line up childcare at the last minute via family/friends, who themselves will be struggling to keep all the balls in the air! There’s no point in having people on standby ‘incase’ the call, it’s asking way too much.
Due to the sporadic nature of my work hours I don’t qualify for childcare help via tax credits and it seems pointless to accept some of my few and far between wages in childcare vouchers if I don’t know when I’ll be able to use them
Sorry to be contributing with such a negative post, but I want to scream!
Gosh Adele! I’m soooo sorry!! It seems such an injustice that you are out of work! I’ve never met anyone so passionate about their career as you! The pregnant ladies of Lanarkshire are missing out BIG time, with you not being there to provide your midwifery skills.
I hope something more permanent comes along soon!…
2yeah, i’m thinking of switching between a general prompt like “bad week” “good week” etc and a specific question. sometimes i just think people don’t want to write about specific questions.
hmmm…
