Friday Fiction: Barefoot

June 18, 2010 By: admin Category: Creative Mamma, Mamma's Memes

Friday Fiction: Barefoot

There were strappy sandals of various heel heights, shiny court shoes in an array of colours, pretty ballet pumps in a variety of fabrics and an array of pretty bejewelled flip flops.  By-passing the towering high heels, she picked up a pretty pair of red shiny pumps in her size, as well as a pair the next size up.

Sitting, she eased her own shoes off.  She was wearing loosely-tied training shoes, which had been squashing her feet all morning.  She rubbed her aching feet, before gingerly trying on the ballet pumps.  She groaned as she realised that there was no way she was going to be able to put on the larger pair of shoes, let alone the ones in her normal size.

She padded, barefoot, back to the display and picked the next two sizes up.  Then she padded back to her seat to try the shoes.

“Aaaaargh!”  She threw the larger shoes down in disgust.  They still did not fit.  She felt like one of Cinderella’s ugly sisters.

She padded, barefoot, returning the cursed shoes back to the display, and picked up the biggest pair of flip flops she could find.  They were three sizes bigger than her normal shoes.

She padded back to her seat and attempted to slide her swollen right foot into the shoe.  The bejewelled V-shape cut into the top of her foot, and it was only half on.

“Right!”  she exclaimed impatiently, “I’ll just have to try these then.”

She marched, barefoot, over to the Men’s shoes and perused what was available.

“Ah!” she said, spying a selection of flip flops in black, blue, khaki and tan.  She grabbed two pairs of black ones, four and five sizes bigger than her normal shoes.

She was triumphant when she managed to ease her feet into the smaller of the two pairs.  She stood up and flip-flopped to the mirror.

“They look hideous, but they’ll do,” she sighed, rubbing her swollen tummy, “See what you’ve done to Mummy’s poor feet!”

Five Question Friday

June 18, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Five Question Friday, Mamma's Memes

Oh how I’ve missed participating in this fun meme in the past few weeks, when my blog was offline!

1. What is your favourite thing about summertime?

It’s definitely going away on holiday and spending more time with Hubby and the kids.  I live in Scotland, and we are not guaranteed to have good weather over the summer months.  (It has been great so far this year though!…)  Therefore, in order to enjoy a little warmth and sunshine, we have to travel afar!  This year we’re off to the Spanish island of Majorca for two weeks, and I can’t wait!  We’re staying in Cala Bona, a lovely little fishing village, with sandy coves and a harbour – the perfect place to relax with the family (i.e. no “lager louts*”!)

2. What is your ideal retirement location (if money didn’t matter)?

Much as I love my homeland, if money was no object, then I would love to retire in a warm sunny place like Cyprus or Florida.  If I had to stay in Scotland, I quite fancy the idea of retiring to the peace and solitude of rural Perthshire, with its stunning scenery!

3. Do you live in the same town you grew up in?

No, I moved away from Glasgow many years ago, but it’ll always feel like home to me!  I don’t stay too far away (about 30 miles?), so I still get to spend time there quite often.  However, I do not see me ever moving back to Glasgow.  I prefer the semi-rural location we live in at the moment.  I do know of quite a few of my old school friends who still live in the area where we grew up (one of them actually still lives in the same house!)  I can’t really imagine still living there – my life has moved on so much, and I am grateful for the experiences I’ve had in the three different locations I’ve lived in since moving away from my home town.  I’m thankful too for the many friends I’ve made in these different locations!

4. What nervous habit did you have as a child that you kicked to the curb before becoming an adult?

Ooooh!!  This is a hard one!….  The only thing I can really think of is that I used to crack my knuckles a lot (which drove my parents mad!), but I haven’t entirely kicked the habit – I still can be found doing this from time to time!!  My mum used to say to me, “Stop doing that!  You’ll give yourself arthritis!” :o

5. What is the most embarrassing thing that happened to you while on the job?

OMG!  I thought this question was a bit… erm… rude… at first!!  ROFL  ;) *red face*

Anyhoo!  The most embarrassing thing to happen to me at work is probably being caught by my new boss, dancing around with two conical party hats, al la Madonna’s conical bra, at a Christmas party just ONE WEEK after starting a new job!  *cringe*

*lager louts - alcohol-filled, noisy and disruptive, single males.  Such people can be found at the busier resorts such as Magaluf.

The One-Minute Writer: Today's Writing Prompt: This moment

I am a fulltime working mum at the moment.

I wish I was a fulltime work at home mum.

I’m glad I am not unemployed.  I’m glad I’m not childless.

I am thankful for where I am and what I am at this moment.

The One-Minute Writer: Friday Fiction: Wine/Whine

Tomorrow night, I'll be joining friends and family to celebrate the Hen Night of my wee sister, Elaine.  We will be eating fine food, drinking copious amounts of wine, and dancing into the wee small hours.

On Sunday morning, Dad is sure to hear us whine:

"I need into the bathroom!"

"I'm gonna be sick!"

"My head hurts!"

"I'm never drinking again!"

This Week’s Five Questions

May 21, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Five Question Friday, Mamma's Memes

1. Do you have an iPhone and, if so, how do you get apps and what are your favorites?

No, but I have a Blackberry smartphone.  I only use basic apps like Twitter, Facebook and Google Maps. I’d quite like to get an iPhone when my current contract expires, as I think I’d appreciate the plethora of apps available for it!  :)

2. What is your fondest memory of K-3rd grade?

LOL  I’m not quite sure what this question means, but I’m guessing it means “Kindergarten to third grade at school”?  I live in the UK, so I’ll demonstrate my creative license to change this question to:
“What is your fondest memory of Primary School?”
To be honest, I do not have one memory that stands out above all others.  I loved my years at primary school, and so the entire experience provides me with lots of happy memories.  I had great teachers, I did well in my lessons and, most importantly, I met a lot of great friends, many of whom I am still friendly with today.
Unfortunately, it has to be said that I do not look back on my secondary school (high school) years with quite the same level of affection.
3. What makes you cringe at the thought of touching?
I absolutely DETEST feet!!  Yuch!!  (Apart from cute little baby or kiddie feet of course!)  I could never be a chiropodist / podiatrist!  That would be a nightmare job for me! *shudders*  I used to do party plan for Vie At Home, doing spa parties, where I would demonstrate spa treatments for hands and feet.  I would give all the guests a hand treatment, but would ask them to use the foot products on their own feet.  There was no way I was going near people’s cracked skin, corns, varucas, bunions or fungal infections!  *starting to feel queasy now“*

4. If you could have any celebrity show up on your doorstep who would it be and why?
I would love celebrity interior designers, colin and Justin to turn up on my doorsteps and offer to resign my entire house!  That would be sooooo cool!  I did actually meet them once, albeit very briefly.  They were at an award ceremony that I attended with Hubby, and I (literally) bumped into them at the bar!  They’re very handsome men! ;)

5. What would you say is your best physical feature?
I think I have nice slim but shapely legs.  I’m actually very happy with my body at the moment, having recently lost over 20lbs.  :)

Working Mommy Wednesday

May 19, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Mamma's Memes, Working Mamma

Are you the Mom you thought you would be?

I always thought I’d be a working mum. My husband works in the building trade, and so his job, although well paid, is never very secure. However, I always expected to just work part-time while my children were young.

Things never work out quite how you expect them to though, and an unexpected change in circumstances lead me to look for a full-time while the girls were just three years old and still at nursery school.

Thankfully, my job is not far from my home or the girls’ school, so I have virtually no commuting time. I also work flexible hours, so I’m able to tailor my working week around my childcare.

I’d really love to be able to reduce my hours, and I hope to do this in a year or so. At the moment, I can drop my girls off at school every morning. I’d like to reduce my hours so that I can pick them up from school every day too.

Ideally, I’d love to be a fulltime work-at-home mum, making a good income from my blog and other writing projects. This is my dream.

One Minute Writer – Control Freak

The One-Minute Writer: Today's Writing Prompt: Control freak

I am a control freak. Period.  I have difficulty in delegating work tasks to others, as I always fear that they will not do it as well as I would do myself.  I fear that I will end up having to re-do it myself!  This, of course, is ridiculous, as the tasks are never that difficult.  I just find it hard to hand over the reins and feel that I will lose control over the whole situation if I do not keep a close involvement in everything!

Twin Tuesday on a Wednesday

May 19, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Mamma's Kids, Mamma's Memes, Multiple Mamma, Twin Tuesday

TwinHappy.com

Yes, I know it’s Wednesday, but I sooooo love taking part in the Twin Tuesday meme that I thought I’d just go ahead and post it late.  It’s not the first time I’ve posted late, and it certainly won’t be my last!….

TwinHappyJen from Twin Happy was late in posting her Twin Tuesday post yesterday, as she had taken her twins out for the day, then she fell asleep, exhausted, on their return!  LOL. :D   Jennifer and her lovely daughters live on the other side of “The Pond” so the time difference meant that it was after 1am here in Scotland when she posted.  I was tucked up in bed, fast asleep by then!

This week’s QOTW:

Do you buy two of everything for your twins? Or do they share certain things?

We have always bought the girls one each of small toys and treats, and just one of larger items to share.  We’ve been doing this since they were babies, and we still do it now they are approaching their sixth birthday.  Family and friends have followed our example for Christmas and birthday presents.

When they were babies we only had one baby swing and one baby walker, which they would take turns to use. To be honest, the decision to do this was based, in part, on a space-saving exercise, as much as it was a conscious decision to teach them to share.   Soft toys, dollies and doll’s prams were bought in twos.  Books, DVDs and puzzles were not.

When the girls were two, we asked our families to pool together to buy the girls some outdoor equipment for our garden.  The girls were delighted with their triple swing set, slide, double trampoline, sandpit and playhouse.  This collection has been added to over the years, with another larger slide and a seesaw.  They share these outdoor toys, not only between the two of them, but also with their friends (particularly their best friends who live next door).

One Christmas, Santa bought them a doll’s house.  It was a huge doll’s house, standing taller than the girls.  Santa had also bought them a Barbie each (similar, but not the same).  The girls have played well together with this doll’s house over the years.

In recent years, I have tried to encourage a little individuality in my girls.  Therefore, when they are asked to choose a small toy, treat or item of clothing, they can pick a different item from that of their sister.  We do, however, insist that the item is of similar size, value and quality.

Last Christmas, Santa brought the girls a Nintendo DSi console each (in different colours) and a selection of games to share.  Friends and family also bought the girls a selection of games to share.  They have managed to share their games quite happily most of the time.  However, they have been known to come running to me whining,

“Mum!  NAME has had the WHATEVER game for a very long time, and won’t let me have a shot!”

In March, Rachel won £50 at the School Spring Fayre.  Hubby and I suggested she use the money for a share toy for both her and her sister to enjoy.  She agreed.  Both girls discussed what they would like to spend the money on, and it was unanimously decided that they would like to buy Mario Kart Wii and a couple of games for their DSi consoles.

Aren't my daughters gorgeous? ;) on Twitpic

Having observed the singleton children of friends and family, I can honestly say that my girls are far better at sharing their belongings than other children.  I believe this has a lot to do with them being twins and having to share everything from such a young age (even Mummy’s time).  However, I do give credit to their good behaviour too.

The One-Minute Writer: Disagree

May 18, 2010 By: admin Category: Creative Mamma, Mamma's Home, Mamma's Memes, Mamma's Pets

Today’s Writing Prompt: Disagree

Think about the person you are closest to. Write about something on which you disagree.

I am an animal lover.  Hubby is not.  I would love a pet cat (or maybe even two).  Hubby does not want any pets.
We do actually have pets.  We have two rabbits, Chip ‘n Dale, who live in a hutch and run in our back garden.  I adopted them from an old school friend, whose rabbits had babies.  Hubby did not want rabbits.  Hubby does not want any pets.
One day my daughters and I will talk him round.  One day we’ll convince him that our little home needs a little pussy cat (or two) to roam around and laze in the sunny spots of our livingroom floor.  But for now, at least, Hubby doesn’t want any pets.

One Minute Writer: Relationship

May 18, 2010 By: admin Category: Creative Mamma, Mamma's Kids, Mamma's Memes, Miscellaneous Mamma, Multiple Mamma

I’ve found a fantastic daily meme, which I intend to participate in every day, if possible.  Each day we are given a prompt, and then we have to write a short post, relating to the prompt, in just 60 seconds.

This is yesterday’s One Minute Writer prompt, but I had a bad Internet connection last night and was unable to post.

Today’s Writing Prompt: Relationship

Write about a relationship in which you’re not involved, that you observed this weekend.

Twin Sisters

They chatter incessantly.  Their giggling is infectious.  Engaged in play, they work well together.  One tends to be a bossy boots, giving instructions to the other more placid and accommodating one.  They mock each other playfully, but when they get tired they can niggle and irritate one another a little.

Mommy Moments – The Joys of Inset Days

May 17, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Mamma's Diary, Mamma's Kids, Mamma's Memes, Opinionated Mamma, Organised Mamma, Working Mamma

Photobucket

My daughters are off school today, as it is an inset (AKA in-service) day, when the schools are closed to pupils to allow the teachers to participate in training workshops. These days are a major pain in the butt for working parents like me, as we have to either take the day off or arrange childcare cover.

I am very lucky to be blessed with the best inlaws I could ever wish for. They are always on hand to look after the girls. I would not have been able to return to work, and certainly not fulltime hours, if it were not for my wonderful inlaws. They have helped out with childcare, to top up the girls’ nursery hours and after-school club hours, for almost five years now.

I am also fortunate to have a decent amount of annual leave entitlement in my job.  Due to my long continuous service, I have the maximum amount of days – 33 days, as  well as eight days public holidays.  This allows me to be able to take a week at Easter, three weeks in the summer, a week in October and a week at Christmas, with a few days left for other eventualities.  However that still leaves a week at Easter, three weeks in the summer and several inset days for me to have to make alternative childcare arrangements.

I’m fortunate, too, to work flexible working hours, with no core hours.  This was particularly useful today, as I had to drop the girls off at the with my inlaws before work, which is normally about a fifteen mile round trip.  However, with all the roadworks, reduced speed limits, diversions and temporary traffic lights en route, this task took considerably longer than usual.

Now, I’m off to schedule my childcare arrangements for the summer holidays which are just six weeks away!….

Friday Memes – Welcome New Followers

May 14, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Five Question Friday, Friday Follow, Mamma's Memes

Scroll down for to the very bottom to see my old holiday snap for Friday Photo Flashback.

1. Take your pick…date night, girls night out, or night out alone?

Hubby and I don’t have very many date nights these days.  It has to be a special occasion (Valentines, birthdays or anniversarys) for us to go on a “date” these days.  Even then, it was my birthday the other week there, and we spent the day in the park with the girls (which was very enjoyable, it has to be said!) and then went to McDonalds for dinner!  So no romantic candlelit dinner for me then! ;)   Well, to be fair, he did take me shopping to pick my birthday gift the day before, and then we went for a Eat All You Like Chinese Buffet!! ;)

I used to LOVE my Girls Nights Out in my life B.C.  We used to have such a laugh, and dance our socks off!!  :D   Now, I don’t have the time, money, energy, attire or inclination for those sorts of nights out very often!  I can’ t handle my drink the same as I used to B.C. and I certainly can’t handle the hangovers!!  ;P  I live too far away from the ‘Big Smoke’ now, and I simply prefer my home comforts, snuggled up on the couch at home, watching TV or playing the Wii with the family.

I NEVER have, and NEVER will have the inclination to go on a night out ON MY OWN!!  I would be very self-conscious and VERY bored!

To be honest, my favourite nights out (or in!) tend to be out with Hubby and one or two other couples (friends / siblings).  These kind of nights are good fun, cos I can feel like a cosy couple but still have a good blether* and a boogie with the girls!  Perfect. :)

2. Can you touch your nose with your tongue?

No, I can’t.  Next question!…. :)

3. What is your favorite flower and why?

I love roses!  I love almost every variety and colour of rose.
I also love sunflowers.  They are truly awesome! :D

4. If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?

“Study harder.  Stop reading trashy teenage magazines.  Forget about boys for a few years – at least until you pass all your exams!! ” ;)

“You won’t always be that skinny!  You need to cut out the junk food and exercise more!”

However, all my mistakes, my wrong turns, my bad decisions have all lead me to the very place where I am today and, you know what, it’s not too bad, really!  :)

5. If you won the lottery, what is the very first thing you would do?

The VERY first thing? Scream and dance all round the room and probably scare my girls half to death!!  :0

The first thing SPENDING-wise would be to pay off all our debts (mortgage, loans, cards, etc…) – Now that would feel fantastic!!  :)

*Blether means to have a right good chinwag (chat). :)

Twin Tuesday – I Know I’m No Longer a NEW Twin Mum When…

May 12, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Mamma's Kids, Mamma's Memes, Multiple Mamma, Twin Tuesday

Sorry! I’m posting this a little late this week! :(

TwinHappy.com

I always enjoy participating in the Twin Tuesday meme at the Twin Happy blog.  This week, I’m taking part by not only answering the Twin Happy QOTW, but also by providing my views re helicopter parenting versus free range parenting.

This post is, of course aimed at parents of twins and multiples, but parents of singletons can feel free to give their views in the comments below.

First, this week’s Twin Happy QOTW:

Finish this line: You know you’re no longer a NEW Twin Mom when…

  • You no longer have to plan each outing like a military operation.
  • You no longer need to call on the help of a friend or family member for a trip into town or to the health centre.
  • You no longer have a shopping trolly piled high with nappies, wipes, etc….
  • You no longer have a pile of muslin squares in your laundry basket every night.
  • You no longer have to have eyes in the back of your head trying to supervise two curious toddlers.
  • You no longer get a great workout, simply by taking your twins out in their big heavy twin pram.
  • You no longer have to leave a potty in the bathroom, just in case BOTH twins need to go at the same time!
  • Not just close family can tell the twins apart!

Free Range V Helicopter Parenting

I was guilty of being a Helicopter Parent to my twin daughters when they were pre-schoolers.  I always hovered nervously around them in soft play areas and swing parks, trying not to say, “Ooooh! Be careful!” too often, and failing miserably.

I’ve inherited the Excessive Worrier gene from my mother and grandmother.  From the moment my precious little girls were born by emergency caesarean section, six weeks early, I have worried constantly about them.

Now they are at school, they are becoming more independent.  I do now let them play outdoors together without me being there.  However, it’s just in the security of our back garden, and I do tend to be in the kitchen or dining room, listening out for them.  When we are walking, the girls do like to run on ahead sometimes.  Thankfully, they are both very sensible little girls with good road sense.  They always wait for me at the kerbside, so that we can cross the road safely together.

I think parents are a lot more aware of the dangers of paedophiles, murderers, bullying, dangerous dogs, boy racers, etc than of my mother or grandmother’s generations.  However, I honestly do not think our children are any more vulnerable than we were ourselves.  We have to allow our children freedom to explore, have fun and yes, even to do silly things that might harm them.  This is how they learn.

I am just thankful that my girls have each other.  They can look out for one another and protect each other, when I’m not there to do it.

Mommy Moments Monday – I’m Turning Into My Mum!

May 10, 2010 By: admin Category: Mamma's Kids, Mamma's Memes

Photobucket

Do you ever feel like you’re turning into your mother?  People have been telling my sister and I for years and years, that we are soooooo like our mum.  Since becoming a mum, almost six years ago, I see myself becoming more and more like her.

I came across a great blog post at the weekend.  It was by Sharon Fitzgerald from A Flock of Fitzgeralds.  Sharon had stopped by my blog on the Friday Follow, followed me  and left a comment.  Therefore I, in turn, visited her lovely blog and was delighted to find her Saturday post called “Lessons My Mama Taught Me”.  It’s a list of 25 mama quotes and the lessons behind them.  I had a good chuckle reading the post, as it brought back many memories of my own childhood.

Funnily enough, I’ve come to realise that I’m actually churning our these Mummy phrases to my five year old twins:

“Stop making that face!  The wind will change and it will stay that way!”

“Oh well, if you fall and break your leg, don’t come running to me!”

“You better finish all your dinner or you’ll not grow up to be big and strong and healthy!”

“Stop your crying or I’ll give you something to cry about!”

“There’s starving children in Africa that would be happy to eat your dinner!”

“Just you wait until your Dad gets home!”

“Take your jacket off, or you’ll not feel the benefit when you go outside!”

Please visit Sharon’s blog to read her 25 Mama lessons:

Friday Memes

May 07, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Five Question Friday, Friday Follow, Mamma's Memes, Miscellaneous Mamma

1. What is your worst memory of your siblings?

I’m six years older than my little sister, and I can remember her being an annoying little pain in the butt whenever I had friends over.  She was always being cheeky and interrupting us, making fun of us and acting silly.

The problem was that we shared a room, so I would resort to (literally) throwing her out the room and sitting against the door to stop her getting back in.  After much kicking and screaming, she would run to Mum and whine:

“MUMMY!  They’re not letting me in the room!”

Sometimes Mum would attempt to appease her with suggesting another fun activity for her in the livingroom.  However, sometimes Mum would insist that I let her back into the room.  Then Wee Sis would return all triumphant and be even more annoying than ever!

Wee Sis & I dancing on holiday circa 1983.

The thing is, the two of us got on really well (most of the time) when we were on our own.  The only time she really acted up was if I had friends round.  I realise now that she was probably just jealous of the time spent with my friends.

Thankfully we get on very well now.  I am proud as punch to be her bridesmaid at her wedding in July.

2. What was YOUR naughtiest childhood memory? (Must be something YOU did, no pawning it off on someone else!)

This is a hard one!  I’m sure my Mum and Dad would be better placed to answer this one!  I can remember many a time being told off, and bundled into my room in disgrace, but I honestly can’t remember ONE particular reason why!  I think I was always a bit ‘lippy’ so I reckon most of the time I got punished for answering back.  I was just as stubborn in those days as I am now, and ALWAYS wanted the last word!  (Much to my detriment!)  However, I can’t really remember any particular mischevious episodes.  I think my parents realise now, that they were lucky to have such well-behaved kids as me and my sis!

3. Where do you like to go to relax?

I actually like to go walking to relax and unwind.  It’s a great way to de-stress.  I also enjoy soaking in a warm bubble bath with scented candles and relaxing music.  Bliss.

4. What was the last thing you won?

I won a bottle of port in a raffle at a Ladies Night recently.  I have not yet opened it.  Cheeky Vimto anyone?  ;) I’d much preferred to have won the Zumba lessons, pole dancing lessons (yes, you read that correctly!! LOL) or beauty treatments, but hey, a prize is a prize!  :)

5. If you could be on a game show, which would you choose?

It would have to be Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire?  This is the only game show I have actually applied to enter.  In its heyday about ten years ago, I phoned up several times to enter.  I suspect I would be absolutely rubbish at it anyway!  My mind would probably go blank and I’d be unable to answer even the most simple questions.
