Friday Memes

May 07, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Five Question Friday, Friday Follow, Mamma's Memes, Miscellaneous Mamma

1. What is your worst memory of your siblings?

I’m six years older than my little sister, and I can remember her being an annoying little pain in the butt whenever I had friends over.  She was always being cheeky and interrupting us, making fun of us and acting silly.

The problem was that we shared a room, so I would resort to (literally) throwing her out the room and sitting against the door to stop her getting back in.  After much kicking and screaming, she would run to Mum and whine:

“MUMMY!  They’re not letting me in the room!”

Sometimes Mum would attempt to appease her with suggesting another fun activity for her in the livingroom.  However, sometimes Mum would insist that I let her back into the room.  Then Wee Sis would return all triumphant and be even more annoying than ever!

Wee Sis & I dancing on holiday circa 1983.

The thing is, the two of us got on really well (most of the time) when we were on our own.  The only time she really acted up was if I had friends round.  I realise now that she was probably just jealous of the time spent with my friends.

Thankfully we get on very well now.  I am proud as punch to be her bridesmaid at her wedding in July.

2. What was YOUR naughtiest childhood memory? (Must be something YOU did, no pawning it off on someone else!)

This is a hard one!  I’m sure my Mum and Dad would be better placed to answer this one!  I can remember many a time being told off, and bundled into my room in disgrace, but I honestly can’t remember ONE particular reason why!  I think I was always a bit ‘lippy’ so I reckon most of the time I got punished for answering back.  I was just as stubborn in those days as I am now, and ALWAYS wanted the last word!  (Much to my detriment!)  However, I can’t really remember any particular mischevious episodes.  I think my parents realise now, that they were lucky to have such well-behaved kids as me and my sis!

3. Where do you like to go to relax?

I actually like to go walking to relax and unwind.  It’s a great way to de-stress.  I also enjoy soaking in a warm bubble bath with scented candles and relaxing music.  Bliss.

4. What was the last thing you won?

I won a bottle of port in a raffle at a Ladies Night recently.  I have not yet opened it.  Cheeky Vimto anyone?  ;) I’d much preferred to have won the Zumba lessons, pole dancing lessons (yes, you read that correctly!! LOL) or beauty treatments, but hey, a prize is a prize!  :)

5. If you could be on a game show, which would you choose?

It would have to be Who Wants To Be A Millionnaire?  This is the only game show I have actually applied to enter.  In its heyday about ten years ago, I phoned up several times to enter.  I suspect I would be absolutely rubbish at it anyway!  My mind would probably go blank and I’d be unable to answer even the most simple questions.

New Friend Friday
The Girl Creative
This week, The Girl Creative wants to know about our most embarrassing moment. So here’s the story I promised you at the top of this post:

Last year, on holiday in Florida, we visited an outlet shopping mall.  We all had a great time browsing the bargains in designer stores.  The ten of us in our party split up to look at different stores.  I was with my mum and one of my daughters, when we went into a shoe shop to browse.  The store was very busy and the aisles were very narrow, so my mum soon left the store with my daughter to wait outside.

I spotted a gorgeous pair of Nine West shoes.  They were red peep-toe platform wedges.  I just had to find my size and try them on.   I eventually managed to find a pair in my size, but it was difficult to juggle the box, the shoes and my bags.  There was no seat nearby and nowhere to lean on or lay the box or my belongings on.  I had already kicked off my own flip flop sandals, and so bent over to put one of the new shoes on my feet.  It fitted – yay!  So I leaned forward to try on the other foot……. Aaaaaaaaargh!!!!…… I lost my balance and fell backwards, knocking over LOTS of boxes of shoes, both legs in the air (with a short summer dress on! *blush*), and there  was a collective “OH!!” from the squillions of other shoppers in the store, many of them who IMMEDIATELY ran to my aid!  (How embarrassing!)  A shop assistant helped me up (with great difficulty!)  I could hardly moved for laughing (albeit out of nerves!)  She then took me to a corner of the store to sit, made sure I was okay and then left me to try on the shoes in comfort, while she went back to tthe ‘scene of the crime’ to re-arrange all the boxes I’d knocked over.  I ended up buying the shoes, but I left the store with a face almost the same colour as the shoes!!

My family and I all had a good giggle about it when I relayed the story to them later.  They all wish they’d been there to see me lying flat out on the floor, amongst all the displaced boxes, legs in the air, flashing my knickers at all an sundry!!  :D

Kreativ Blogger Award

April 28, 2010 By: admin Category: Miscellaneous Mamma

I’ve been tagged for another blog award.  Yay!  This time it’s a Kreativ Blogger award, and I’ve been tagged by Sabina at MummyMatters.  Thanks Sabina!  Much appreciated.

As with most of these blog awards, I have to divulge a little about myself and tag other bloggers.  For this meme I have to reveal seven things that you did not already know about me.  So here goes:

1.) I am currently doing a home-study creative writing course, to help channel imagination, creativity and love of writing.

2.) The only time I ever came first at anything in my P.E. class was a test / quiz on the rules of basketball.  I won an Easter egg, and the (saught-after) respect of my P.E. teacher.

3.) I have never broken any bones in my body…. yet!

4.) My first ever crush was on Bill Oddie of The Goodies!

5.) The first music gig I ever attended was Cliff Richard with my parents at the Glasgow Apollo.

6.) My favourite colour is red.

7. I once had a magazine makeover.  I was eighteen years old, when I applied for the “Couples Makeover” with my then-boyfriend.  We had just split up (perhaps a week or two) when the letter arrived inviting us to take part in a makeover.  I mentioned it to a platonic male friend, who offered to come with me, if the magazine agreed.  They did.  I plan to blog about this in more detail, at a later date, once I manage to get my hands on the photos.  So, watch this space!………  :)

Now I have to tag some of my favourite blogs with this award:

May I suggest that you visit the above blogs, and tell them Mamma Kerr sent you! ;)

If you’ve been tagged, then you should copy the award logo above, paste it on your blog, post your random facts and tag others.

Monday Memes – Join In!

April 26, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Mamma's Memes, Miscellaneous Mamma

All About Me Mondays hosted by Mommy Brain.

This week Mommy Brain asks:
What makes your green-eyed monster rear its ugly head?

  • When I see mothers casually strolling out of the school gates on their way home every morning.  I have to rush off to work.  I used to work part-time and I enjoyed my two or three days spent at home.  Now I work fulltime and yearn to spend more time at home.
  • When I see pregnant women I wish I could be pregnant again.  I really enjoyed my pregnancy, and would love to experience that amazing sensation of a life moving about inside my tummy again.  The first six months of my twin daughters’ lives were such a blur that I would love the opportunity to experience those tiny baby days again!
  • When I read of people landing a book deal, I wish it was me.  As an aspiring writer myself, I long for writing success of my own.  However, I know that I need to put a lot of time and effort into my writing before I can hope to reep the benefits.
  • When I see people’s beautiful mature landscaped gardens, I wish that my garden could be more of a idyllic retreat.  We have a large garden – the largest plot in our street.  However, even after being here for five years, the garden is far from finished.  We do not have many plants or much garden furniture.  I would like to have lots more plants, small trees, beautiful furniture, lights, patio heaters and a little summer house or gazebo at the end of the garden, where I could hide out in during the summer!

Oh My Monday hosted by All These Things

  • My face has broken out in painful pimples!…… Oh my!
  • I have managed to restrain myself and put off ordering my Lost Series 5 boxset until Pay Day!….. Oh my!
  • My daughters managed to buy toys prices #4.50 on their Raninbows outing on Saturday.  However, I’d they only had #3.50 each in their purse!…… Oh my!
  • I’m doing a ten mile sponsored walk in less than two weeks, but I’ve done practically no training!….. Oh my!

TGIF – Five Question Friday

April 23, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Five Question Friday, Mamma's Memes, Miscellaneous Mamma

1.      What was the first car you owned?

When I first passed my test, when I was twenty-one (eons ago!!), I just borrowed my then-boyfriend / now-husband’s car.  He had a Ford Escort at the time.  I only needed to use the car at weekends or in the evening, as I commuted to work by bus.

I didn’t actually get my own car until I was pregnant with the girls.  We were going to simply upgrade our little Rover 25 to a bigger family car.  However, we ended up keeping the smaller car for Hubby to use and buy a bigger car for me to use.  Therefore, we bought a Renault Scenic.  I have another Scenic now, and Hubby has another smaller car – a wee Chevvy! ;)

2. What song are you embarrassed to know the lyrics to?

Oooooooh!!  This is a good one!  There’s a few I suppose.  I was going to say something like “The Chicken Song”, “Star Trekkin’” by the Cast of Spitting Image or “Superman” by Black Lace, as these are really cheesy annoying songs.  However, I’m sure that most people who grew up in the UK during the 80s would remember these lyrics.

Therefore, I think I’ll opt for “We Don’t Talk Anymore” by sir Cliff Richard.  *cringe*

3. Have you ever had stitches?

Yes, I split my head open when I was about eight years old.  I had just got new glasses, and so was not yet used to the prescription.  I tripped and fell when setting the table at home, and I whacked my head off the hard arm of my parents’ leather sofa.

I hadn’t realised I’d split my head open until my dad came rushing over and shouted to my mum:

“OMG! Annette’s split her head open!  It’s like a big gaping hole!!”

I then noticed all the blood and wailed:

“Aaaaaaaaaaaargh!!! I’m gonna die!  I’m gonna die!  I’m gonna die!!”

This scared the heck out of my two-year-old sister, who was soooo relieved to see me, alive and well, but with a partially-shaved head and stitches, when I returned from casualty a couple of hours later! L

The only other time I’ve had stitches was when I had my girls by emergency caesarean section.

4. What was your first job?

I had a paper round in my teens, delivering the Glasgow Evening Times after school, Monday to Friday plus a Saturday morning.  I also delivered the Sunday morning papers, which was back-breaking due to all the Sunday supplements!

When I was sixteen I got promoted to a weekend sales assistant at the newsagents, where I served behind the counter on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings.

5. Who is your favorite Sesame Street character?

It has to be Oscar, the resident grouch! ;)   I still love grouchy characters in TV shows!  They’re so much more interesting than goody-two-shoes!!

What I Meant to Say… in Sainsbury’s Today…

April 21, 2010 By: admin Category: Blog Hops, Mamma's Diary, Mamma's Memes, Mamma's Neighbourhood, Miscellaneous Mamma, Opinionated Mamma, Working Mamma

I was standing at the checkout at Sainsbury's on my lunch break today, with my basketful of shopping all laid out on the conveyor belt when, out of the blue, a grey-haired old man steps in front of me and places four tins of soup in front of my groceries.

I stand agog, utterly speechless.

He then has the audacity to turn round and say to me:

"I'm sorry, have I just skipped in front of you?"

"Yes, I believe you have."  I reply dryly.

"Well, I'm sorry but I didn't see you."

"I can't understand why you didn't see me.  I've been standing here all along, with all my shopping laid out on the belt."  I respond.

"Aw c'mon!" he retorts, "Do you really think I would be so ignorant as to just barge in front?"

"Meh!" I shrug, biting my tongue and sooooooo wanting to say this:

"Yes, you bl**dy well DID barge in front of me, you ignorant old git!  If you didn't see me then I suggest you need an eye test, Mister!  I've been standing here for five minutes with a helluva lot more shopping than your poxy tins!  If you really couldn't wait in the queue, then you should've used the Self-Serve checkouts.  Why are you out shopping at lunchtime anyway?  You have ALL DAY to shop, whereas I am on my LUNCH BREAK from work!  Didn't see me, my @rse!  Should've gone to Specsavers!  Moron!"

If you would like to vent your spleen and launch a tirade of abuse at a deserving party, then hop over to Hiding From The Kids to take part in the What I Meant To Say Wednesday meme.

Could we live without flights?

April 20, 2010 By: admin Category: Miscellaneous Mamma, Opinionated Mamma

I’ve just read an interesting BBC News article on the pros and cons of a flightless world, which has been inspired by the recent airspace restrictions over Europe, due to the volcanic ash cloud.  The article definitely provides food for thought.

Personally, the prospect of not having the option to fly off to sunnier climes for a fortnight’s holiday fills me with dread.  There’s a beautiful big world out there and I want to see as much of it as I can!  Furthermore, I have family over in Canada, who I wouldn’t get to see very often if we had to rely on travel by boat.

I also use Send Out Cards to create unique personalised greetings cards.  I create them online, but then a physical greeting card is printed and sent from Utah in the United States.  These cards usually take a week to arrive to my recipients in the UK.  If they were to come via the sea, instead of by airmail, they would take a lot longer!!

From time to time, I purchase items from Etsy, Ebay or Amazon from the other side of the Atlantic.  I like having the option to widen my search when looking for things to buy!

What about you?  What would you miss about air travel?  Or do you live in a flight path, and therefore relish the idea of a little peace and quiet?

You can read more on this story on the BBC News Website here.

Teachers and Pupils Unable to Return to Class Today Due to Ash Cloud

April 19, 2010 By: admin Category: Miscellaneous Mamma

Today pupils and teachers are due to return to school  after the two-week Easter break.  However, there will be empty seats and a shortage of teachers, due to people being stranded abroad because of the volanic ash cloud.

An extended Easter break may be appealing to many, but what happens when your employer seeks to dock your wages for failing to return to work?  It hardly seems fair to be penalised for something which is outwith your control.  Nevertheless, a local authority in the West Midlands has stated that it will dock pay from teachers who fail to return to work today.  It advises teachers to claim their travel insurance for lost earnings.

You can read more on this story at the BBC News website here.

Study Reveals Children’s Preference for Gender Specific Toys

April 16, 2010 By: admin Category: Mamma's Kids, Miscellaneous Mamma

“Boys naturally gravitate towards cars and girls towards dolls from the moment they first crawl, a study suggests.

City University researchers put a range of toys a meter from 90 children – aged nine to 36 months – and recorded what was played with and for how long.

They found boys spent more time playing with cars and balls, while girls spent more time playing with the dolls.”

It’s been a lovely warm and sunny week here in Scotland (for a change!)  Unfortunately though, I was back at work this week, having been off for an Easter break the week before.  The weather during my week off was unsettled – certainly not the glorious weather we’ve had this week!  Oh well, at least it’s been pleasant weather for walking, which I’ve been trying to do more of lately, in preparation for my 10-mile Midnight Tiara Walk in aid of Strathcarron Hospice on 15th May.
It has also been a week for bad news:
My 20-year-old nephew (yes, I can’t believe I have a nephew in his twenties either!!) has been in hospital for the past ten days with a collapsed lung.  Apparently, otherwise fit and healthy, tall thin men (like him) are prone to spontaneous collapsed lungs, due to the shape of their chest cavities!  He has had various contraptions inserted into his chest over the days, but little improvement in his condition.  Therefore it looks like he will need to have an operation to secure his lung to his chest cavity.
I received the terrible news that  an old friend and former colleague of mine has had a massive heart attack and is recovering in hospital. This was a complete shock, especially as Ian is not that old, and leads a fairly active, healthy lifestyle.
Now it’s time for blog hopping!…

Ten Things That Make Me a Happy Mamma

April 15, 2010 By: admin Category: Mamma's Memes, Miscellaneous Mamma

I have been tagged with the Happy 101 Ten Things That Make You Happy meme by Susie at New Day New Lesson.  Thanks Susie! :)

  1. My Family – Not only time spent with Hubby and the girls, but also our extended families.
  2. My Friends – Having a night out (or in) with good friends is the best kind of therapy!
  3. A Good Read – I love finding a can’t-put-it-down book and then sharing my find with friends and family.  I also look forward to new issues of my fave monthly magazines -  Psychologies & Easy Living.
  4. Eating Out – I’m a foodie and I love to eat out with family and friends. It’s great not to have to cook or clean up!
  5. Sunshine – As a Scot, I appreciate EVERY sunny day!  There’s nothing like a bit of sunshine to lift the mood and make you appreciate your surroundings!
  6. Sunday Driving – I love going for a drive at the weekends – especially in the summer.  I particularly enjoy it when Hubby drives, as I can fully absorb the scenery!  I am privileged to stay in Stirlingshire, where I am only a short drive away from beautiful countryside.
  7. Weekends – As a full-time working mum, I live for the weekends!  Friday evenings make me deliriously happy!  I can then enjoy all of the above!
  8. The Internet – I really enjoy spending time online.  I enjoy blogging, blog hopping and social networking.  I have met so many wonderful, interesting people via the Internet.
  9. The Wii – Playing the Wii is a great way to de-stress!  It’s an activity that the whole family can enjoy.  We’ve been reduced to fits of laughter playing some of the games – especially on Wii Fit Plus.
  10. Walking – A good long, brisk walk in the fresh air and sunshine clears my head and lifts my mood.  Bliss!

Now it’s time to tag others to take part in this meme.  I’ve tagged the people who have most recently commented on the Mamma Kerr blog:

lee-ann-crazylife.blogspot.com/

brittneymclain.blogspot.com

benforemanfamily.blogspot.com

jayayceeblog.blogspot.com

copmama.com

Please feel free to join in the fun by copying the Happy 101 badge and posting the ten things that make you happy on your blog.  Alternatively, you can just list your ten in the comments below.  (Comment Luv is another thing that makes me a happy mamma!)
