This is a photograph of my sister and I with our gran, which I think was taken in the summer of 1982, when I was ten years old and my sister was four.  It was taken in Gran’s back garden.

This photo makes me chuckle because you can clearly see that, even though there’s six years between my sister and I, we were often dressed the same.  Check out those rather fetching terry towelling shorts!  (All the rage in their day!  Honest!  LOL)   I like how we’re colour co-ordinated!  And what about those lovely knee-high socks?!   Also, you’ll notice that my sister and I had the same ‘pudding bowl’ hairdo!!

I particularly love this photo because it brings back lots of fond memories of my lovely gran, who is sadly no longer with us.

This photo was taken during the school holidays.  My sister and I spent much of the school holidays at our granparents’ house because Mum worked part-time.

We used to always visit my grandparents on a Friday evening and it was always great fun!  Gran, Grandpa and my uncles, who still lived there at the time, would always be laughing and joking.  My uncles always liked to wind my gran up with practical jokes, and I loved it when she would get a fit of the giggles!

Today is both World Poetry Day and World Forestry Day.  As a member of Bloggers Unite, I thought I would pay homage to both of these days by sharing a poem about trees, as well as some of  the photographs I have taken of trees in my neighbourhood.

This poem illustrates how important trees are not only to man, but also to birds, animals and plantlife.

The Tree by Anne Kingsmill Finch

Fair tree! for thy delightful shade
‘Tis just that some return be made;
Sure some return is due from me
To thy cool shadows, and to thee.
When thou to birds dost shelter give,
Thou music dost from them receive;
If travellers beneath thee stay
Till storms have worn themselves away,
That time in praising thee they spend
And thy protecting pow’r commend.
The shepherd here, from scorching freed,
Tunes to thy dancing leaves his reed;
Whilst his lov’d nymph, in thanks, bestows
Her flow’ry chaplets on thy boughs.
Shall I then only silent be,
And no return be made by me?
No; let this wish upon thee wait,
And still to flourish be thy fate.
To future ages may’st thou stand
Untouch’d by the rash workman’s hand,
Till that large stock of sap is spent,

World Poetry Day aims to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world.

Fraoch Wood asks us to Plant a Tree on World Forestry Day. By planting an indigenous tree you can make a contribution to reducing CO2 emissions and improve biodiversity in your locale during 2010.Similar Posts:

Why Women Live Longer Than Men

Standing on a bucket on TOP of a ladder, brilliant.

That CAN’T be right.

Ummmm?.at least someone’s holding the ladder steady.

Isn’t this a violation of the seatbelt laws?

Shouldn’t he be wearing a lifejacket?

Wonder what HE makes an hour? It can’t be enough.

Who needs a truck?

I get by with a little help from my friends.

Oh yeah, THAT’s safe!

HMMM, maybe he couldn’t see the huge yellow sign that said CLEARANCE.

Hey, I strapped it down.

Hey, he has a special license to drive that truck.

Maybe we shouldn’t have parked it on the side of a hill.

No problem, I can see through the holes.

It starts at a young age and just gets worse.

You hold it while I whack it with this hammer.

A new OSHA approved substitute for ladders.

Ropes are for sissies.

Kubota’s new tractor mounted scaffolding.

Always follow traffic signs.

All I wanna know is, HOW?

Now I wanna know why…

I can cut it down AND load it in the truck!!

Friday Photo Flashback is the brainchild of Alicia at More Than Words.  She thought it would be good fun to scan and share our old photos and the memories they hold.  I think it’s a wonderful idea, and I’m thrilled to take part in this. 

My photo offering this week is an old school photo from Primary 4, when I was 8 years old.

I am in the front row, third from left.  Check out my lovely ‘pudding bowl’ hairdo and those fetching shoes!!  LOL

This photo provides many happy memories for me.  I loved my primary school years, and I especially loved my Primary 4 teacher – Mrs Lawson.  She was my teacher in Primary 3, 4 and 6, and was definitely THE best teacher I ever had!

Thirty years on (gee, I feel ANCIENT!!), I am still in touch with many of my school friends (mostly through Facebook).  Indeed, I am still in regular contact with six of my classmates from this very photo!

Sisters Tracy Raver and Kelley Ryden, took most of the photographs at their studio in Nebraska when the babies were fewer than 10 days old.
